In Honduras, cutaneous leishmaniasis is a disease that affects mostly the rural population of the central valley. To compare the clinical features of the chronic and acute forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Honduras. Cross-sectional study of all patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis seen at the tropical disease clinics in Honduras between January 1 and December 31, 1996. Cutaneous leishmaniasis was diagnosed in 205 patients. Among them, 155 (76%) had cutaneous leishmaniasis of the chronic form and 50 (24%) of the acute form. The demographic characteristics of patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis of the chronic form and the acute form were compared. We also compared the clinical, laboratorial, and histopathological features of these patients. A total of 39 patients (25%) were from the state of Valle del Cauca. The mean age of patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis of the chronic form was 46.3 years and the mean age of patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis of the acute form was 37.8 years. The mean time between the appearance of the cutaneous lesion and the diagnosis was 9.2 months for the chronic form and 7.9 months for the acute form. The chronic form of cutaneous leishmaniasis is usually found in persons who have had a previous episode of cutaneous leishmaniasis, a history of living in rural areas, who have had a spontaneous or provoked cutaneous lesion, and who have not responded to previous therapy. This condition is more common in the state of Valle del ac619d1d87
